NOTE: This elective is closed in June and December.

PURPOSE: The senior rheumatology elective emphasizes direct patient contact extending the lessons learned from patient evaluation into the pathophysiology and treatment of rheumatic diseases. This elective is primarily an outpatient rotation and includes: osteoporosis detection and therapy, physical therapy evaluation, and rthroscopic surgery. Students function at a level of a resident in providing evaluation and care for typical outpatient rheumatology.

COMPETENCIES: 

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Formal teaching conferences including weekly x-ray conferences and monthly CPC’s complement the program. Written core curriculum including pre- and post- tests and classic articles are provided. Clinical research opportunities are available. Students see an outpatient population of at least 16, with only occasional inpatient exposure. Under ordinary circumstances, students will NOT see inpatients. A unique aspect of this elective is a patient/instructor program that uses actual rheumatology patients to instruct students in the history and physical examination in rheumatic diseases. A reading list and articles will be provided.
