PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.
PURPOSE:
This clinical elective program will provide the student with intensive experience in the diagnosis and management of a spectrum of acute and chronic rheumatic diseases.
COMPETENCIES:
The objectives of the elective are:
- Learning arthrocentesis technique for variety of joints
- Diagnosis and treat variety of autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal conditions
- Education in didactics related to Rheumatology
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The Section of Rheumatology provides both inpatient and outpatient consultative and follow-up services at the University Hospital and JBVA as well as consultative services in the Scleroderma Center and other specialized programs. During the elective, the student will work under close supervision of attending physicians and fellows in caring for outpatients and in providing inpatient consultation. The students participate actively in teaching rounds and weekly seminars.
ASSESSMENT:
Observation of student’s ability to formulate a plan of care. We also review their teamwork to assess their performance. We also review their professionalism with patient interaction.
