PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Participation will be limited to 1-6 fourth-year students per four-week rotation. Students must have completed all M3 core clerkships.
PURPOSE:
The overall objective of this rotation is to educate M-4 students to be able to provide care to patients with common cancers regardless of the specialty in which the student chooses to practice. This rotation will provide medical students the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of the patient with common forms of cancer. The focus will be the integration of molecular biology into the prognosis and treatment of cancer, including advanced, locally recurrent, and some less common neoplasms.
COMPETENCIES:
Students will be expected to gain a better understanding of the biology of cancer and of the emerging role of immunologic and molecular-based therapy. Within this format, we anticipate that fourth-year medical students will have a rewarding learning experience that will provide them with greater knowledge of tumor biology and increased expertise in the care of cancer patients.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
- An ever-increasing amount of patient care occurs in the outpatient setting, where the majority of diagnostic, work-up and treatment decisions are made. Therefore, students will be assigned two half-days per week in our outpatient clinic. Students will be expected to follow and assist an attending (on a one-to-one basis) as he/she sees patients and performs minor outpatient surgeries.
- Monday through Friday, students will participate in daily morning and evening inpatient rounds with the fellows, residents and surgical oncology nurses. Students will be encouraged to follow patients they have seen in the outpatient clinic and will be expected to read about the particular cancer in patients that they follow. Suggested reading, photo copied articles, atlases and reviews of Pertinent anatomy will be available.
- Students will be encouraged to spend time in the operating room. It is expected that they will read about the disease, operative procedure, and relevant anatomy prior to coming to the operating room for all elective cases. As noted above, attending staff will be happy to suggest appropriate reading material.
- Students are expected to attend the Department of Surgery conferences on Wednesday morning as well as the Tumor Board on Monday at 12:00 pm.
ASSESSMENT:
The evaluation of each student will be assessed based upon his/her participation in the aforementioned activities. No formal test or written assignment will be given; rather, the evaluation will be derived from a combination of the student’s ability to demonstrate a logical approach to cancer patient care, preparedness for oral presentations and for the operating room, diligence, and evidence of concern for patients’ well-being.
