Burn Surgery – SHCC

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
M3 who has completed the core clerkship in surgery or M4 students as an elective.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the burn rotation is to offer the student a comprehensive experience in the management of burns and wound care.

COMPETENCIES:

  1. learn resuscitative management of the burn patient
  2. Gain exposure to surgical techniques associated with burn care and wound care.
  3. Learn fundamentals in critical care associated with burn injuries.​

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The Cook County Burn Unit is a division of the Department of Trauma and Burn at the JSH Cook County Hospital. The Burn Unit is comprised of 6 critical care beds and 12 step down beds. The Burn Center sees approximately 400 adult and pediatric admissions annually and all major burns are admitted through the Trauma Unit. The Burn Unit offers an excellent opportunity to learn shock, resuscitation, management of fluid and electrolytes, respiratory care, nutritional care, burn wound care, excisional surgery and skin grafting, as well as outpatient management of small burns. Didactic lectures are given twice weekly by attendings. The student will work closely with the attendings residents and fellows and participate in the work-up and management of the burn patient. Research opportunities within the Department of Trauma and Burn also exist.
