PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Internal Medicine Clerkship
DESCRIPTION:
In this course, students will gain clinical exposure to kidney transplants, which will help them develop a deeper understanding of transplant renal pathophysiology and immunology from a clinical perspective. They will also learn how to evaluate and manage acute and chronic kidney diseases, graft rejection, post-transplant surgical complications, post-transplant infections, and other issues that transplant nephrologists typically encounter. The course will be conducted in person, and students will actively participate in consult rounds and attend conferences, educational activities, and various transplant clinics (such as evaluation and post-transplant care clinics) during their rotation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the conclusion of the course students will be able to: Gather relevant transplant history information from medical interviews, physical examinations, medical records, and diagnostic procedures.
- Gain a basic understanding of the pathology and immunology underlying the various complications post-transplant.
- Develop patient management plans and integration of patient care.
- Learn to function in a multidisciplinary clinical practice to provide effective and safe patient care
- Understand the indications for and complications from the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures considered essential to this specific area of transplant nephrology, including but not limited to renal transplant surgery, renal graft biopsy, hemodialysis.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Learning Activities:
During the transplant floor rounds, daily bedside teaching will be provided. This will allow for one-on-one discussions on various transplant-related topics. Additionally, there will be a specific time dedicated to case discussions covering critical transplant scenarios. Students will also have the opportunity to attend the regular monthly Transplant Nephrology Journal Club if their selection periods coincide with it. The students will have a schedule as described below.
Daily Responsibilities:
Medical students are expected to round daily with transplant nephrology team in the morning hours. They should present their own case with thorough history taking, clinical examination, and treatment plan.
