PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Open to students who have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Surgery.
PURPOSE: Objectives:
- To help the student understand the mechanism of development of critical illness in the surgical patient;
- To recognize organ system failures as they present in the surgical patient;
- To provide exposure to the various diagnostic, monitoring, and therapeutic methods used in the management of critically ill patients;
- To provide opportunity for the student to develop maturity and become comfortable with observing and managing critically ill patients.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The methods employed to meet these objectives include: Twice daily patient care rounds in the surgical intensive care unit. Each patient will be presented. The surgical illness, other underlying medical disease, and methods of monitoring will be discussed. Potential complications, their recognition and management will be explained. Problem oriented discussions will be carried out periodically. Regular assignment of reading material and didactic discussions will be carried out once a week. In addition, the student will be expected to participate in the various surgical and intensive care conferences regularly conducted each week. These activities are directly supervised by the faculty. The student will work with the second year surgical and anesthesiology resident(s) assigned to the SICU and will follow patients closely, assisting in various diagnostic, monitoring and therapeutic procedures such as direct assisting in various laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubations, management of ventilators, interpretation of complex blood gas problems, placement of monitoring intra-arterial and Swan-Ganz catheters, cardiac output measurements, therapeutic bronchoscopy, etc. She/he will participate in various therapeutic decisions made in the management of ICU patients. She/he will be involved in the management of about 10 patients each week. All these activities are directly supervised by the house staff and the faculty.

Reporting Instructions
Reporting is on the first Monday of the rotation (unless a UIH holiday – then Tuesday) at 6am in the 7W Surgical & Transplant ICU of the main UIH Hospital building. Students should locate the SICU residents on service and introduce themselves. Rounds typically begin around 8am.
