Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine – UI Health

Updated: 7/8/15

The elective is designed for M4 and (M3 students who have completed medicine and/or pediatrics core clerkships) but M4 students will be given priority. The elective is not offered in December.

This elective is designed to introduce the student(s) to the various sections of the clinical laboratory and its role in patient care. The goal of this one-month educational experience is to gain basic knowledge of laboratory organization, workflow, specimen adequacy, testing metholodology and test interpretation.

Students will rotate through the four major disciplines in Clinical Pathology: Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology/Hematopathology, and Microbiology. Additional time will be arranged in Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics. During these rotations, the students will meet with the various laboratory directors, supervisors, technologists, and rotating residents to gain an overview of each area. Individual section experiences will vary depending on special projects that may be ongoing. Attendance and participation in departmental conference is encouraged and expected. A separate rotation is available for students who wish to emphasize Surgical Pathology (ELEC 646). A student may devise a concentrated experience in one of the major clinical pathology electives by special arrangement with a Laboratory Director.

These may vary according to the section and laboratory director. Observation, didactic experiences, journal clubs, case presentations, and patient consultations are all utilized during this elective. Students may also be asked to present topics, cases , etc. in an interactive forum with the laboratory directors, staff, and pathology residents.

Evaluation will be based on attendance and overall participation in laboratory demonstrations, seminars, and other rotation experiences.
