PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Students are required to take an online knowledge assessment (5 quizzes, total of 130 questions) prior to the start of the rotation
PURPOSE:
This elective is for the student who would like to add to the basic knowledge gained from the core OBGYN clerkship. The family planning elective allows students more in-depth training in sexual and reproductive health including discussion of pregnancy options counseling, management for pregnancy loss, complex contraception and abortion care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Understand and perform history-taking and physical exam pertinent to family planning care
- Identify benefits/ contraindications of different contraceptive methods and use shared decision-making to counsel patients
- Know methods and potential complications of induced abortion
- Understand social and political context of abortion in the U.S.
- Develop procedural skills for contraception and abortion care
- Maintain professionalism and compassionate attitude toward patients and staff
INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD:
The student will work with Family Planning Faculty and a second year OBGYN resident on the family planning service at the outpatient Center for Reproductive Health (CRH) and assist in the Operating Room (OR) for second trimester abortion procedures. Students will gain expertise in taking sexual and reproductive health histories, pregnancy options counseling, management for pregnancy loss, and complex contraception counseling for patients with medical co-morbidities. This elective will give the medical student an understanding of the complexity of family-planning decision making, counseling, and procedures for abortion and miscarriage management, along with health policies impacting family planning care in the U.S. and abroad.
ASSESSMENT:
- Each student will meet with the course director and each student will receive a written copy of the expected goals of the clerkship at the start of the rotation
- Mid-point feedback discussion with course director
- Faculty and resident evaluation of student’s clinical participation and performance
- Faculty and resident evaluation of student presentation on family planning topic
