PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed all core clerkships
PURPOSE:
To introduce medical students to the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, especially those potentially interested in pursuing a career in PM&R. Students will be exposed to the breadth of PM&R through inpatient and outpatient setting at a freestanding rehabilitation hospital.
COMPETENCIES:
Students will improve their musculoskeletal and neuromuscular physical examination skills. They will learn how to take a functional history. Medical students will learn how to care for patients in a holistic manner and participate in an interdisciplinary team. Students will also understand how rehabilitation fits into the continuum of post-acute care. Students will gain increased comfort in interacting with persons who have disabling conditions.
Students will identify the role of the physiatrist across the continuum of patient care. They will learn to work in an interdisciplinary team setting. They will identify the role of allied health specialists. They will increase their proficiency with the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal examinations. They will learn competent care of an individual with disabilities.
Students will see rehabilitation patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings. They will learn how to perform a physiatric history and physical exam that focuses on function as well as the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal examinations.. Furthermore, students will increase their sensitivity to patients with physical disabilities. They will also learn how to identify secondary conditions and prevent secondary complications in patients with various disabling conditions. In addition, they will observe how the rehabilitation team works to maximize function and quality of life.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Learning activities on the PM&R rotation include didactics, journal club, teaching conferences, independent study with assigned readings and verbal or written summaries of the assignments, and end-of-rotation oral presentation, inpatient rounds and admissions, observation of therapy sessions, team conference and outpatient clinics.
Students will see inpatients and outpatients with conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation, polytrauma, neurological diseases, chronic pain, and medically complex conditions.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be evaluated daily by the residents and attendings. They will receive constructive verbal feedback regarding clinical and interpersonal skills. Students will receive written evaluation at the end of the rotation based on combined faculty and resident evaluation of student performance. Students will receive verbal midterm feedback from the attending 2 weeks into the rotation.
