PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
M3 Core Clerkship rotations should be completed.
PURPOSE:
The objective of the IR elective is to gain clinical and procedural exposure to the practice of IR.
COMPETENCIES:
By the end of the experience, the student should be able to:
- Evaluate diagnostic imaging to identify common pathologies suitable for IR interventions
- Understand basic venous, arterial, lymphatic, intracavitary, organ based anatomy relevant to image guided procedures
- Describe the indications for commonly performed IR procedures including but not limited to image guided central venous line placement, chest port placement, embolization, angioplasty and stenting, thrombolysis, percutaneous biopsy and drain placement, IVC filter placement and retrievals, and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation.
- Describe common interventional procedures
- Perform minor procedures including suturing, line removal, central venous catheter placement, abscess drainage, peripherally inserted central venous catheter placement depending on ability to acquire skills to perform such procedure under direct supervision.
- Participate and manage IR inpatients as part of IR clinical rounds.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student will achieve the learning objects by:
- Participating in pre-, intra, and post-procedure care. This includes performing the initial diagnostic work-up, participating in interventional procedures, and helping with post-procedural care and follow-up.
- Observing and participating in IR procedures
- Attending daily teaching rounds and weekly lectures (didactics, M&Ms, and journal club)
- Presenting relevant IR cases and topics.
The student will be assigned relevant reading material and audiovisual materials during the course of the 4 week rotation.
ASSESSMENT:
Evaluations are based on the collective input of all participating faculty, fellows, and residents. All students are required to give a journal-based presentation on an IR related topic.

Reporting Instructions
Students are to report to Main Hospital (1740 W. Taylor), 2nd floor Interventional Radiology or Room 2600 Radiology Reception by 6:45 AM for the first day of the rotation. Call 312-996-0242 if unable to find location. You must have a clean lab coat and your hospital ID with you on the first day.
