Ethics and Professional Standards- UI Health

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN CURRICULUM:
All students that have completed M2 year.

PURPOSE:
This course offers a focused review of the principles of medical ethics, putting professional rights, duties, and responsibilities at the center, as these involve patient, peer healthcare professionals, and society.

One day each is devoted to the 9 principles of medical ethics articulated by the American Medical Association, which along with its ethics advisories (“opinions”) guide professionals in regard to morally sound relationships with patients, relevant others, and the improvement of healthcare.

The course will be conducted in journal-club style discussion of AMA principles, ethical advisories from the AMA (“opinions”), case studies, and supporting articles from the professional literature.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify key ethical expectations in regard to relationships with patients.
  2. Identify key ethical expectations in regard to relationships with peers, non-MD healthcare providers, and certain others such as family members of patients.
  3. Identify key ethical expectations in regard to expected moral responsibility for social change in regard to healthcare justice.
  • Student will acquire these, skills, behaviors, or perspectives through attendance and participation.
  1. Identify ethical principles for medicine as set out by the American Medical Association
  2. Identify ways to apply these principles to relationships with patients, other professionals, and relevant third parties
  3. Identify ways to rely on these principles as guidance in situations of ethical uncertainty. 

By the end of this 2-week experience, you will be better able to:

  1. Students may expect to be able to identify ethical expectations as framed by a leading and influential professional association in the United States
  2. Students may expect to be able to evaluate physician responsibilities toward patients in a moral sense
  3. Students may expect to be able to identify physician responsibilities toward peers, other professionals, and relevant third parties in a moral sense.
  4. Students may expect to be able to identify physician responsibilities toward social change required in a moral sense for the improvement of patient welfare


INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD:

  • The course runs two five-day weeks.
  • Learning activities include:
  • review of principles of medical ethics
  • review of the application of these principles to particular issues, as developed in the ‘opinions’ of the AMA, for example.
  • analysis and discussion of illustrative clinical cases and/or legal cases relevant to the issue in question.
  • analysis of key articles from the professional literature that bear on the issues in question
  • Suggested/Required Text
  • All required readings will be drawn from the AMA Principles of Medical Ethics, Opinions, the AMA Journal of Medical Ethics, and select articles from the professional literature all of which are available w/out charge to the students through open sources and/or UIC libraries

ASSESSMENT:
Students will be evaluated relative to their demonstration of informed discussion during class sessions. Any student found lacking in preparation will be advised on that day, with specific recommendations for improvement.
