Pediatric Critical Care – UI Health

PURPOSE/COMPETENCIES:

To begin the development of competency in recognizing and managing critically ill children in a PICU setting.

It is expected that by the end of the four-week experience, the student will have achieved the following:

  1. An advanced level of competency in performance of the age-appropriate pediatric history and physical examination.
  2. A moderate level of competency in the complete work-up and management of children with common diagnoses such as status asthmaticus, bronchiolitis, acute respiratory failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, pediatric sepsis, status epilepticus, and typical post-operative monitoring following surgical procedures.
  3. A beginner’s level of understanding of indications for and learn steps in procedural skills, which may include, but are not limited to nor guaranteed: phlebotomy, IV insertion, lumbar puncture, bladder catheterization, respiratory support management, and arterial blood gas sampling.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:

Students will participate in the PICU service as a member of a multidisciplinary team including the pediatric intensivist, pediatric house staff, clinical pharmacy, nursing, social work, and specialists in relevant disciplines such as pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology, etc. The student will round with the team and attend general pediatric conferences as well as the smaller talks relating to pediatric critical care. They will also work-up and follow patients in the PICU under the direction of the pediatric house staff and the attending in PICU. Goals will include learning an approach to the patient with multiple organ system failure and learning practical application of physiology to critically ill patients.

ASSESSMENT:

Clinical performance is assessed by the attending staff based on the standard elective competencies.
