Hematology/Oncology – UI Hospital/JBVA

Updated:  01/27/22

Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.

This rotation is designed to allow the student to understand the complex decision making required of a consultant for patients with malignant
and nonmalignant hematologic disorders and oncologic consults.

  • To teach students the proper interpretation of blood smears and bone marrow aspirates.
  • To make students familiar with the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities applicable to patients with hematologic disorders.
  • To make the students familiar with patients who present coagulopathies, anemia, or platelet disorders.
  • To acquaint students with the details of acquired and inherited disorders of blood coagulation and to teach them how to use this information to
    diagnose and treat such disorders.

The student takes part in all activities of the Consultation Service. The diagnosis and management of red cell, white cell, and bleeding disorders is emphasized. Attendance at the hematology/oncology clinic of both hospitals familiarizes the student with the long term care of patients with benign and malignant blood disorders. The student takes an active part in weekly hematology/oncology conference and prepares discussions relative to the patient management problems seen during the previous week.

Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance.  Attendings use the provided UIC College of Medicine’s evaluation form which evaluate s the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities.
