PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine and Surgery.
PURPOSE:
The Radiation Oncology Elective will provide the student with an excellent experience in an academic Radiation Oncology Department. The student will learn the fundamentals of oncology, radiobiology, and physics as it pertains to radiation therapy.
COMPETENCIES:
Upon completion of the four- week rotation, the student will be able to perform the following:
- Perform a thorough site specific exam as it relates to the diagnosis: pelvic exam for gynecologic malignancies, rectal examination in gastrointestinal and prostate malignancies, thorough head and neck evaluation including fiberopticnasopharyngoscopy, palpation of lymphatic nodal groups, and breast examinations;
- Understand the natural history of the major types of cancers including breast, lung , prostate, gynecologic, gastrointestinal, and pediatric malignancies. The student will also learn the role of surgery, radiation therapy, and medical intervention in controlling or curing cancer;
- Understand the basics of radiobiology and physics as it pertains to radiation therapy treatment;
- Complete a case presentation to the Clinical Director or Department Chairman.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student will participate in multidisciplinary conferences, intradepartmental morning case presentations, chart rounds, journal club, and resident seminars on selected cancer sites. The student will gain knowledge at both formal didactic sessions and individual discussion with attendings. The student will be responsible for performing consultations and participate in treatment planning sessions and learn to function as a resident in radiation oncology. Our department offers three dimensional radiation therapy planning and treatment capabilities that provide students a unique opportunity to gain experience using modern radiation therapy treatment. Students will see patients in a typical radiation oncology clinic, with the majority of patients treated in an outpatient setting. During special procedures the students will be required to participate in the operating room or treatment suites. Students with a special interest in research will be encouraged to participate in clinical or physics research.

Students reporting to Radiation Oncology for the Radiation Oncology Elective are to go to Room C400 in the Outpatient Care Center (OCC), located in the North Tower of 1801 W. Taylor Street at 9 AM. Upon arrival, they are to check-in with Matthew Koshy, MD or Elisabeth Perez
