Core Emergency Medicine – AIMMC

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN CURRICULUM:
 The students must have successfully completed core rotations in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, OB-Gyne, and Psychiatry. Cancellations for the first 3 blocks must be made at least 8 weeks before the rotation or students will receive an incomplete for the elective.

Purpose:
To expose the student to the concepts and skills involved in Emergency Medicine practice. Students will learn how Emergency Medicine care interfaces with other medical specialties, hone skills as the initial provider caring for a diverse spectrum of patients, assess, and determine treatment. Students will also interpret testing and make patient dispositions in a time-constrained setting.

Competencies:

  • Accurate, concise evaluation of the undifferentiated patient presenting to the ED including developing appropriate individualized differential, testing, and care plans.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with health care team
  • Effectively communicate/develop good rapport with patients and families
  • Understand the scope and limitations of patient care in the ED

Instructional Features:
Students will work in the ED under the direct supervision of attendings and EM residents.  Learning activities include lectures, case review, conferences, ward-round, outpatient evaluation, literature reviews and group work. There are approximately 14-8 hour clinic shifts, 5 hour/week conferences, and SIM/Skills/Case sessions totaling 3-4 hours.

Assessment:
Students receive written evaluations by attendings and residents for each clinical shift, departmental input and end of elective NBME. The NBME is held the afternoon of the final Friday of the rotation. Skill/SIM sessions are formative sessions that will not be graded. Both ongoing and midterm feedback is provided during the rotation.
