  • 115 residents in the Categorical and Preliminary Programs
  • 16 Medicine/Pediatrics residents
  • 15 Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine residents
  • 6 Neurology Interns
  • Total of 152 trainees
  • Flex – X for PGY-1s to ensure more ambulatory experience and reduce the number of consecutive inpatient rotations
  • 4+2 system for PGY 2/3 residents: 4 weeks of inpatient or consult rotations followed by 2 weeks of a Y two-week rotation
    • Senior residents rotate on 4 weeks of “X” + 2 weeks of dedicated ambulatory “Y” time. Each “X” block comprised of two “X” rotations.
    • X rotations (2-weeks): general medicine wards, subspecialty wards, ICU, subspecialty consults, night float, or vacation
    • Y blocks (2 weeks): general medicine continuity clinic, subspecialty clinic, research, urgent care, longitudinal electives and dedicated didactics
  • Continuity clinics at UH and the Jesse Brown VA
  • Golden weekends on the Y two-week rotation
  • Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) rotation: resident rotation providing clinical training in bedside ultrasound and other procedures, such as lumbar punctures, paracentesis, and thoracentesis
  • Simulation Training: residents learn Central Line, Arterial Line, Peripheral IV and Paracentesis procedures at SAIL
  • Protected educational time to attend weekday conference from 12:00pm-1:00pm
  • Intern Bootcamp and Research Lecture Series
  • Flamin’ Feud after noon conference- a weekly diagnostic reasoning conferences that gamifies learning
  • UIH Hospitalist Afternoon and VA Morning Reports
  • Specialty Tracks: Physician Scientist, Academic Internal Medicine, Global Health, Medical Education, Innovation in Internal Medicine, Leaders for local Changes, and Medicine-Geriatrics
  • Educational Stipend: Residents receive a GME monthly education stipend and DOM funding to attend conferences.
  • Project and Investigative Research (PAIR) online database which helps to connect residents with ongoing faculty and fellow projects
  • ROAAP fund to offset open-access publishing fees educational experiences
  • American College of Physicians: The program pays for membership which allows additional educational opportunities as well as discounts on educational materials.
  • Additional rotations, including narrative medicine, medical education, ultrasound, and procedures for residents who are interested
  • Within our family: currently 27% of our residents are doctors that are underrepresented in medicine.
