Adam Mikolajczyk, MD Program

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Illinois Chicago!  We are one of the most diverse academic training programs in the country, proudly caring for underserved and marginalized patient populations across the city and even the state.  The excitement of helping physicians from all walks of life reach their full potential motivates our leadership team every day.  We strongly believe that our patient population, family-like atmosphere, emphasis on autonomy, and responsiveness to feedback provide the ideal environment for training the next generation of physicians. Please learn more about our program in the short introductory video below.

To utilize a team-based approach to cultivate an academic residency program with an unwavering commitment to preparing its trainees for a wide-range of career paths while emphasizing the provision of high-quality, patient-centered care for the state of Illinois’ medically underserved populations in a learning environment that prioritizes the appropriate balance of autonomy and supervision, evidence-based approaches, diversity and inclusion, cultural humility, humanism, wellness, and togetherness.

Besides our Categorical and Preliminary Medicine programs, we offer combined Internal Medicine residencies in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics.

The University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency program is a three year, ACGME accredited program with teaching sites at both the University of Illinois Hospital (UIH) and the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center (JBVA).

This one-year program is designed for individuals pursuing careers in other specialties. Residents in this program undertake a year of training that is identical to the first year of residency in the categorical program.

The department’s longest standing combined program, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, is a four-year experience for residents who wish to be experts in the non-surgical care of patients of all ages. These trainees alternate between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics over the course of four years, satisfying board requirements for certification in both specialties.

The combined five-year residency in Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine is designed for those trainees who wish to complement the breadth of skills in Emergency Medicine with the depth of Internal Medicine. Rotating between Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, residents satisfy board requirements for certification in both specialties.

The University of Illinois Chicago Internal Medicine Residency has specialized tracks that give interested residents a more focused residency experience.
