Welcome Alumni and Friends of the UIC Internal Medicine program!
Anne Polick, MD, Program Director
Hello, Alumni! I am a proud graduate of the class of 2013, and I was so honored to have accepted the position of Deputy Program Director in September of 2022 when Dr. Zar got promoted to the Vice Head of Education. Alongside the Program Director, Adam Mikolajczyk, we had enormous shoes to fill after 33 years of Fred Zar’s visionary leadership. As a mentor, role model and master diagnostician, Fred Zar built a program that emphasized autonomy, mentorship and non-hierarchical collegiality to deliver exceptional clinical care to an underserved population. I wondered in 2022 if my co-residents carried their training with them as I did, and might be interested in an update, so I created the biannual IM residency newsletter.
As a graduate of this program myself, I hold it dear, and I see the value in preserving what makes UIC unique, while continuing to build upon it. We continue to prepare our trainees for a wide range of career paths while emphasizing the provision of high-quality, patient-centered care for the state of Illinois’ medically underserved populations in a learning environment that prioritizes the appropriate balance of autonomy and supervision, an evidence-based approach, inclusion, cultural humility, and humanism.

A Letter from Dr. Fred Zar
I am proud to be a part of the University of Illinois Internal Medicine Residency family and leadership and to be able to keep in touch through this website and our newsletters with the over 1,000 physicians that entrusted UIC with their residency training during my prior role as Program Director. One of my most precious pleasures is seeing our graduates go on to do great things here at UIC and elsewhere throughout the world. My successors, Dr. Adam Mikolajczyk as the Program Director that followed me, and Dr. Anne Polick as the current Program Director, have created a myriad of new initiatives that will maintain UIC as a top academic program for decades to come, many of which are listed as part of our three-year plan shown on this page. I thank you in advance for any financial contributions you chose to give back to the program and hope that you will enjoy receiving our newsletter that will keep you in touch with your roots here.
