PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN CURRICULUM:
Student must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in pediatrics.
PURPOSE:
This program is a flexible curriculum designed to meet the interests and the needs of students primarily desiring a broader clinical experience. Some limited short term research projects may also be arranged. The primary objectives are to improve the data gathering and the problem solving skills of the students and to transmit a basic core of knowledge of anemia, bleeding disorders, etc., and malignancies in children.
COMPETENCIES:
Following completion, the student should be able to evaluate peripheral blood smears in the workup of hematologic diseases, direct the diagnostic workup and treatment of iron deficiency and other common pediatric anemia, understand the pathophysiology of white cell and platelet disorders, work up common coagulopathies, recognize clinical features of pediatric malignancies, and describe basic principles of cancer chemotherapy.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The clinical program consists of daily inpatient ward rounds; two to four clinics per week; weekly seminars during which the elective student is expected to be the main speaker in at least one seminar, housestaff conference, or tumor board meeting; at least one laboratory session per week; and attend combined pediatrics tumor board conferences in other major university hospitals in the Chicago area. The student is expected to attend general pediatrics grand rounds once a week, during which hematology/oncology problems are often presented and discussed . Unscheduled time is spent in examining inpatients, reviewing charts, reading selected journals and specialty texts, and seeing patients assigned to the student. Such patients may require daily out-patient care, including chemotherapy. Also during this time, students are learning or improving diagnostic procedures and skills in administering chemotherapeutic agents by various routes under supervision; learning how to relate to the family and to the child who has a chronic disorder of a very serious nature, including dealing with death and dying; learning how to cooperate and coordinate often very complex and complicated care needed by patients with other specialties and disciplines involved in total care of the patients; seeing patients for consultations; presenting consult cases and discussions; working up new patients; and organizing material and presenting patient and case discussions at tumor board conference. The curriculum can be modified if necessary to provide time for the students to pursue courses in related fields such as blood banking or special coagulation studies or to pursue other limited research projects.
Pediatrics E&M Conference (E&M = evaluation and management):
This is an educational enhancement specifically designed for the M4 student in Pediatrics – a case-based learning session designed to focus on issues that you likely will face as residents. All students on pediatrics electives will gather at 8am every Thursday of their rotation in 1208 CSB (12th floor conference room).
ASSESSMENT:
Performance is reviewed by the attending physicians on the Hematology-Oncology service.
