IM Alumni and Friends, and Giving

Drs. Adam Mikolajczyk, Anne Polick, and Fred Zar

Welcome Alumni and Friends of the UIC Internal Medicine program!  We wanted to create a space to spread the good news about our program, recognize the achievements of our current and former residents, and create a pathway for giving to our program.

Anne Polick, Deputy Director

My name is Anne Polick, and I am honored to have accepted the position of Deputy Program Director in September of 2022. Alongside the Program Director, Adam Mikolajczyk, we have enormous shoes to fill after 33 years of Fred Zar’s visionary leadership. As a mentor, role model and master diagnostician, Fred Zar built a program that emphasized autonomy, mentorship and non-hierarchical collegiality to deliver exceptional clinical care to an underserved population.

As a graduate of this program myself, I hold it dear, and I see the value in preserving what makes UIC unique, and continuing to build upon it. Our mission is to prepare our trainees for a wide-range of career paths while emphasizing the provision of high-quality, culturally competent, patient-centered care for the state of Illinois’ medically underserved populations. We aim to foster a learning environment that prioritizes the appropriate balance of autonomy and supervision, evidence-based approaches, diversity and inclusion, humanism, wellness, and togetherness.

Contributions from alumni and friends will go towards supporting scholarly activity, reemphasizing the culture of camaraderie after COVID and continuing to expand professional opportunities for our trainees in their time with us.  Listed here you will find changes implemented for the prior two academic calendar years. We thank you for your time, attention, and consideration.

Adam Mikolajczyk, Program Director

I first came to UIC in 2018 as a faculty member in Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a transplant hepatologist.  I was initially drawn to the institution’s unwavering commitment to caring for underserved patient populations, strong prioritization of diversity, and rich tradition of innovation within the field of medical education.  Each of these values remain very important to me, but it was being embraced into the IM residency family, which truly embodies the institution’s unparalleled collegiality and humility, that forever shaped my career.

Over the next three years, we hope to achieve a fundraising goal of $75,000.  Through your generosity, we would like to grow the initiatives of our newly formed DEI committee, our wellness committee, and our family-style journal clubs; enhance research opportunities offered to our residents; and continue to enhance our learning opportunities offered, including the tropical medicine elective, a certificate-program for POCUS training, medical Spanish elective, public advocacy elective, and the various tracks. Please consider making a one-time or recurring gift.
