PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkship in Surgery.
PURPOSE: Students on the Trauma Surgery Service at Christ Hospital & Medical Center will learn basic principles of assessment and resuscitation of major trauma victims, as well as advanced education in the critical care management of critically injured patients.
COMPETENCIES: Invasive procedures necessary for resuscitation of major trauma victims, interpretation of critical care data including hemodynamic parameters, ventilator management.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The student will actively assess about 40 trauma patients/week and will learn to perform basic resuscitative procedures such as chest tube insertions, FAST ultrasound, laceration repair and central venous access. Education opportunities include teaching rounds with faculty twice/week, formal lectures/case presentations twice/week, and active participation in the out-patient clinic for trauma patients. Participation in a wide variety of operative procedures is highly recommended, but not mandatory.
ASSESSMENT: Based on direct attending surgeon interactions with input from resident staffs.
