PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have successfully completed the Surgery, Medical, and Pediatric Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
Objectives of this program: include a broad exposure to the various aspects of plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, including basic wound care, repair of major wounds of the trunk, extremities, face and head; aspects of aesthetic surgery and breast reconstruction; introduction to maxillofacial trauma and craniofacial surgery (including cleft lip and palate); head and neck cancer and reconstruction; familiarization with basic techniques such as wound closure, Z-plasty, skin grafts and soft tissue flaps; in general, brief overview of the scope of this specialty and the developing of self-confidence in certain basic principles and techniques.
COMPETENCIES:
Student will have the opportunity to hone skills.
- Simple interrupted, buried and running sutures placement (PATIENT CARE)
- Evaluation and management of acute and chronic wounds. (PATIENT CARE, MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE, SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE)
- Interpretation of craniofacial and dental images. (PATIENT CARE)
- Injection of local anesthetics for field block and nerve blocks. (PATIENT CARE)
- Teamwork with non-MD clinicians in a collaborative team environment. (PROFESSIONALISM, COMMUNICATION SKILLS)
- Management of Perioperative patients. (PATIENT CARE)
- Participate in a range of non-oncologist breast surgeries. (PATIENT CARE, MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE)
- Explore the medical, ethical and emotional issues surrounding purely elective treatment (cosmetic surgery). (PROFESSIONALISM)
- Review the anatomy of H&N, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems. (MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE)
- Management/selection of learning opportunities to fill personal knowledge gaps. (PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING, PROFESSIONALISM)
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Instructional methods will include one-on-one teaching between student and house staff, and student and faculty member, seminar or symposium format, participation in clinics, ward rounds and operating room experience; furthermore, student activities will include requirement to research and report on at least one topic mutually agreed upon by student and faculty to be presented to the plastic surgery staff just prior to completion of the rotation. Student will have the opportunity to participate in general plastic surgery clinics and the Craniofacial Center during this rotation.
Multidisciplinary care is provided at the Craniofacial Center for our patients where students will interact with Audiologists, Speech Therapists, Orthodontists, Oral Surgeons, Anaplastologists, Social Workers, Psychologists, and the Plastic Surgery Team and be exposed to the most up to date technologies we use to care for our patients, including 3D and VR surgical modeling.
ASSESSMENT:
Mid-term feedback and final assessment are supplemented by individual meetings with the chief residents and attendings during the rotation to offer ongoing evaluation and guidance.
