Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkships. Students interested in an orthopedic career are recommended to take the four-week elective early in their 4th year. PURPOSE:
The goal of this elective is to further develop the arts and skills involved in performing a history and physical on the patient with special reference to musculoskeletal problems and trauma. Further background and understanding of common problems will be gained, along with insight into rationale and evaluation of radiographic and laboratory tests used to establish a definitive diagnosis. Skills in treatment will be developed, including application of casts and splints and traction and basic surgical skills.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The major emphasis is on the evaluation, acute treatment and rehabilitation of the patient with musculoskeletal disorders and trauma. Management repair of lacerations, reduction and treatment of fractures receive major emphasis. The student will participate as a member of the team on all cases. General exposure will be given to orthopaedic aspects of common orthopaedic conditions.
ASSESSMENT:
The student evaluation is to be based on attendance (10 %), participation (57%), and a written exam (33%).
