PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS)- UI Dentistry and Health
PURPOSE:
This course provides a unique opportunity for students who are interested in learning more about the field, scope, and practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS). This course will allow the medical student to participate in the daily activities associated with OMS residency including inpatient service, consult service, ED consults and trauma, outpatient consults, outpatient procedures. All participating students will be under supervision of a senior resident or attending. All participating students will be able to participate in various aspects of procedural and surgical care depending on prior knowledge and training. In the outpatient setting, students will be able to practice the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines under the supervision of residents, however they will not be able to perform any dental procedures.
COMPETENCIES: This rotation will give students exposure to direct patient care in the inpatient and outpatient setting. This will also involve direct patient care in thorough and focused history and physical examination of the head and neck region.
- Medical knowledge: – The extensive clinical and didactic exposure to OMFS will greatly expand the knowledgebase of the student, as OMFS is not part of the regular curriculum of COM, yet an important part of interdisciplinary care. We expect the broadened knowledge to facilitate a better understanding of holistic, interdisciplinary patient care for the student, regardless of his/her career goals.
- Practice base learning and improvement: – We expect students to acquire their knowledge from a combination of reading (foundational knowledge and about inpatient/outpatient cases) as well as through direct observation and participation in clinic and surgical cases.
- Interpersonal communication skills: – Students will learn the role of the specialty in interdisciplinary patient care (both in outpatient and inpatient setting) and learn to effectively communicate with other medical/dental specialties.
- Professionalism: By direct mentorship we aim to instill appropriate professionalism in our students. We hope to educate them on appropriate communication with the care team.
- System based practice: Students will understand how OMFS integrates into a comprehensive health system.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Learning activities include the following: Lectures, case reviews, conferences, ward-round, outpatient evaluation, term papers, library work, literature reviews, laboratory research, field activity, or group work.
ASSESSMENT:
Student performance is evaluated by house staff and attending faculty who worked with the student. Knowledge and skills are rated during patient care situations and throughout the course of students’ didactic discussions with various faculty members. During the last week of the rotation, the student and PD will meet to discuss the rotation feedback and evaluations.
Interim feedback will be provided by residents and if necessary, the faculty director
