PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
The goal of the elective is for students to develop cognitive skills and competency to evaluate patients with infectious diseases.
COMPETENCIES:
The objectives of the elective are to enable the student:
- To learn the mechanisms of action and proper use of antibiotics.
- To learn the proper approach to patients with septic shock, fever of unknown origin, neutropenic fever and AIDS.
- To understand the principles of diagnosis and therapy which underlie the effective management of infectious diseases.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Lack of outpatient activity compensated for by a vibrant educational experience via consults on a variety of different wards in the hospital. Students care for patients from a broad socioeconomic background with a variety of pathology. Students have the opportunity to experience a leading institution for advanced heart care, and a national leader in lvad cardiac support. In addition, students participate in the care of common community based health conditions, as well as transplant related complications. ASSESSMENT:
Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance at the bedside and in rounds. Attendings use the College of Medicine Clerkship Evaluation form which evaluates the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities. Feedback is at least monthly (end of rotation), as well as mid-rotation in the event schedules align. Daily formative feedback is also a part of the teaching process.
