Hematology/Oncology – UI Hospital/JBVA

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.

PURPOSE:
This rotation is designed to allow the student to understand the complex decision making required of a consultant for patients with malignant
and nonmalignant hematologic disorders and oncologic consults.

COMPETENCIES: 

  • To teach students the proper interpretation of blood smears and bone marrow aspirates.
  • To make students familiar with the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities applicable to patients with hematologic disorders.
  • To make the students familiar with patients who present coagulopathies, anemia, or platelet disorders.
  • To acquaint students with the details of acquired and inherited disorders of blood coagulation and to teach them how to use this information to
    diagnose and treat such disorders.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student takes part in all activities of the Consultation Service. The diagnosis and management of red cell, white cell, and bleeding disorders is emphasized. Attendance at the hematology/oncology clinic of both hospitals familiarizes the student with the long term care of patients with benign and malignant blood disorders. The student takes an active part in weekly hematology/oncology conference and prepares discussions relative to the patient management problems seen during the previous week.

ASSESSMENT:
Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance.  Attendings use the provided UIC College of Medicine’s evaluation form which evaluate s the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities.
