Endocrinology – ALGH

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Student must be an M4

PURPOSE:
A four week rotation designed to expose the student to the common and, at times, the rare endocrine and metabolic disorders through both in-hospital consultations and office practice. Through this clinical exposure, the student will be able to expand upon his/her knowledge of the actions of specific hormones and their role in normal body functions and disease states. While hospital patients will be seen, this rotation will involve mostly outpatient endocrine evaluations.

COMPETENCIES: 

  • Manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • Diagnose and treat complications of diabetes
  • Recognize, work-up, and treat hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and the thyroid nodules
  • Recognize the presentation and learn how to work-up the more esoteric endocrine disorders

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student will develop the ability to perform a complete endocrinologic evaluation and interpret the results of both physical examination and laboratory findings. In addition, there will be Endocrinology conferences, Nuclear Medicine-Thyroid Conferences and impromptu didactic sessions for the student to attend.
