PREREQUISITES:
This 4 week elective is geared towards M3 and M4 students who would like to gain basic knowledge of ultrasound in emergency medicine and be able to incorporate it into their everyday clinical practice. We do not require any pre-requisites as we believe that the ultrasound roation will help students go on to excel in their other rotations.
PURPOSE:
This Emergency Medicine elective is designed to help incorporate emergency bedside ultrasound as a tool for diagnosis and treatment. Current literature and future applications of emergency bedside ultrasound will be explored while on rotation.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
The student will be expected to attend an average of four bedside teaching sessions per week at UIC and one ultrasound quality assurance meeting (Wednesday or Friday afternoon). The student will also be required to complete pre-assigned reading assignments. Bedside scanning will be performed on a variety of patients presenting to the emergency department.
ASSESSMENT:
The rotation is graded on participation (timeliness, professionalism, enthusiasm), OSATs, two presentations during image review (journal article and interesting case). The rotators will also complete an end-of-rotation test given in the last week of the rotation. There is an optional opportunity to work on a scholarly activity with faculty members. This may include but is not limited to preparation of a case report or image in medicine for a peer reviewed journal, authorship on a blog post, assistance with faculty academic projects.
