PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
This 2 or 4 week elective is geared towards M3 or M4 students who would like to gain basic knowledge of clinical research in emergency medicine. This research elective program teaches the fundamentals of research. Research associates assist with patient identifications and enrollment in ongoing EM research programs. Coupled with the “hands-on” data collection, the didactic program focuses on research design, data collection techniques, database construction, statistical analysis, and working together as a team.
We do not require any pre-requisites as we believe that the clinical emergency medicine research rotation will help students go on to excel in their other rotations as this program stresses not only research design and data collection methods, but independent thinking, and professional responsibility. Research associates will be required to complete the CITI Protection of Human Subjects Research Training and HIPPA Privacy Training modules offered online through the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects prior to the start of the elective. PURPOSE:
This Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Associates elective program is designed to teach students the fundamentals of clinical research. Students work closely with faculty in the Emergency Department screening and identifying patients for a variety of clinical projects. A supplemental seminar series will introduce students to innovative focused areas of medical research.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the research electives, student will
- Obtain basic knowledge of clinical research through basic research design, research ethics, data collection, and databases configuration
- Assist in ongoing research protocols and Quality Improvement Studies being conducted in the University of Illinois Department of Emergency Medicine
- Gain comfort with data entry, basic statistical analysis, and abstract and manuscript preparation.
The student will be expected to attend 1(2-hour) didactic sessions per week at UIC. The student will also be required to complete pre-assigned reading assignments. Students will be required to complete a predetermined number of recruitment shifts in the emergency department for hands on research experience based upon the length of the research elective..
ASSESSMENT:
The student will work with the emergency medicine research faculty and will be judged based on participation and progression throughout the elective. Students will meet with faculty at midpoint and be given feedback regarding their progress during the rotation. They will be given a final grade at the end of their rotation.
WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
Due to the 24 hour / 7day a week nature of the emergency department students will have the option of completing research recruitment shifts during days, evenings, nights, and weekends. The recruitment shifts will be a minimum of 4-hour increments per shifts.
