PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Completion of all M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
The student will have an opportunity to observe and interpret cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The student will be encouraged and assessed in his/her electrocardiographic interpretation skills as well as echo, stress testing and cardiac catheterization related matters. The student will also be introduced to advanced imaging modalities available in the institution. Familiarity with all of these tools will aid the student in developing proper diagnostic and prognostic skills in caring for patients with cardiac issues.
COMPETENCIES:
The learning objectives for this rotation are as follows:
- To develop and refine skills on cardiovascular examination.
- To understand cardiac anatomy, physiology
- To improve the skills necessary to assess and manage outpatients and inpatients with common cardiovascular conditions such as coronary artery disease, angina, myocardial infarction, dyslipidemia, heart failure, valvular heart disease, hypertensive heart disease and arrhythmias
- To improve the skills in the diagnosis, recognition and interpretation of the most common noninvasive cardiovascular findings on electrocardiograms, exercise stress tests and echocardiograms.
- To become familiar with the indications and complications of invasive cardiovascular and electrophysiologic procedures including cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stenting, diagnostic electrophysiologic studies and pacemakers/ intracardiac defibrillators.
- The student is expected to demonstrate improvement in physical diagnosis, clinical assessment and test interpretation skills throughout the rotation. The student will work on a one to one basis with a designated attending for the duration of the rotation (who may be supplemented with an associate of the responsible attending for the rotation.)
- Immediate informal feedback will be provided to the student throughout the rotation as well as formal feedback at the end of the month.
- Depending upon each individual case, specific topics for reading sessions and discussions will be provided.
- The student will attend conferences in the field of cardiovascular medicine, such as clinical cardiac catheterization, echocardiography conference, EKG conference and Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Conference.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Students will participate in teaching rounds, reading echoes/stress tests, lectures, conferences, literature reviews and library work.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will receive midterm feedback through a verbal discussion with their mentor. Final evaluation per UIC form.
