General Overview:

Students are assigned to inpatient medicine services consisting of an attending physician, residents, interns, and other learners. There is one guaranteed day off per week (typically one weekend day). There will be formal teaching sessions including teaching rounds, various conferences, online and other activities.

In general:

Monday-Friday: The day typically begins at 7:00am, and daily activities consist of team work rounds, morning report, attending rounds, noon teaching conference, patient work-ups and patient care activities. When not on call, the hospital workday typically ends around 5:00pm.

Weekends: Schedule varies depending on call schedule and number and complexity of patients. Formal teaching rounds do not occur on weekends. When not on call, weekend workday typically ends around 1pm.

Days off: On average you will get one day off per week. Typically a Saturday or Sunday.

Hospital Prerequisite:

  4. Vaccination/Immunity Status- student must indicate the date of the immunity titer and circle the result. If no titer, please indicate vaccination dates as listed.
  5. TB information must be current within one (1) calendar year of the rotation start date. If your TB test expires during your rotation you are required to get an updated test prior to the rotation start date. If you’re current TB test was positive, proof of a negative chest x-ray or medical clearance is required. If you had a positive TB test in the past, a screening questionnaire completed within one year of your schedule rotation is sufficient for clearance.
  6. Every student, rotating on a clinical service, must be fit tested for a TB mask. The date and type of mask must be indicated on the medical clearance form.

Rotations will be CANCELLED if completed forms and information are not received and approved by the Coordinator, Medical Student Affairs a minimum of four (4) weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

 

PARKING

If you plan to drive on your first day your parking will only be validated on the day of your orientation. Please bring your parking ticket in with you.

Parking Registration

  • After you receive your AAIMMC Medical Student ID Badge, the Parking Service office will register your vehicle and will receive a parking tag to place in your car windshield.  (This will be done during orientation).
  • Please make sure you have the make/model of your car and the license plate number.
  • Parking Fee: $40.00/mo., $10.00 per week for split rotations with 24-hour access
    • Payment Method: Credit/Debit ONLY
    • Payment will be collected in the Parking Office. The Site Coordinator will take you to register during orientation, unless otherwise directed.
    • Location: Parking Office (G402 – the ground floor of the main hospital, elevator 3 or 4)
    • Office Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • Students will be assigned to the employee garage (located south on Wellington Ave. – east of the CTA tracks). Once this garage becomes full, individuals will be redirected to park in the lot located on the corner of Wellington and Sheffield.  If you have further questions regarding parking, please contact the Parking Office at 773-296-5434.  You can push the green button at entrance/exit posts should you have questions regarding badge reading errors.

During the 2020/2021 pandemic season: Clerkship students and Sub-I students will meet with Dr. Dunphy for an exit interview. Students will then meet with the site coordinator for rotation clearance.  Student will be notified of the time to appear.  During this time students will return all materials, parking tags, and books from the library.  The site coordinator and student will sign-off on the clearance checklist.  A copy of the signed clearance form is sent to Medical Education.

Other Essentials:

Orientation is mandatory.  Requesting specific team assignments is not allowed. Days off for religious holidays not recognized by the school or Advocate Aurora IMMC requires prior approval from the medical school, and Dr. Dunphy/or Site Coordinator before beginning the rotation.  The request should be submitted and approved within 30 days of start date of rotation. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Overview:

Description:  WE ONLY HAVE UIC STUDENTS FOR IP SERVICE, UNLESS CHOOSING An ELECTIVE (M4).

Students will attend a half-day General Internal Medicine clinic both to see new patients with focused problems and to follow up on patients they (or other M4 students) have seen in the hospital. This clerkship is designed to expose you to primary care Internal Medicine, which is often very different from the practice of inpatient medicine. The goals of the clerkship include:

  • to learn to diagnose and care for acute and chronic medical problems in an ambulatory setting
  • to become familiar with screening guidelines based on a patient’s age and gender
  • to begin to implement primary prevention during most patient encounters
  • to become familiar with the policies and protocols of managed care
  • to be able to perform a Medline search efficiently and apply the information to your practice
  • to experience the rewards and satisfactions for the practice of internal medicine. These objectives are met through direct patient encounters, through participation in case-based lectures, and through a mentorship with primary care internists.

The following is a typical schedule of the clinical responsibilities of the students assigned to this site:

Guidelines for Housestaff Interaction with Medical Students Assigned to Floor Rotations

  1. Lines of Command

MS-3 Each MS-3 will be assigned to a PGY-I. This PGY-I should initially assign 3-4 interesting patients to their MS-3. These patients are still the responsibility of the PGY-I. The MS-3 should write orders and daily progress notes, but these notes and orders must be read, corrected as necessary, and then countersigned by the PGY-I.

  1. Attendance at Morning Report & Department of Medicine Lectures
  1. a) Morning Report
    All MS-3 students assigned to Internal Medicine rotations form the University of Illinois are required to attend morning reports each weekday at 7:00 AM sharp.
    MS-3 students will occasionally be asked to present cases.
  2. b) Lectures
    MS-3 students are invited to and expected to attend as many Department of Medicine lectures as their patient care responsibilities allow. After the lectures are over, please sign in and include your pager numbers.
  3. Taking Call:
    MS-3 students will take call with their assigned PGY-I. The PGY-I should alternate admissions with the MS-3, but must review all histories and physicals, notes, and orders written by the MS-3. For direct admissions this can be done in concert with the senior resident on floor call. MS-3 students should never work up more than two patients per day.
  4. Patient Load:
    MS-3 students should initially be assigned 3-4 patients whom they should follow until discharge, transfer, or death. They should receive additional patients in concert with their assigned PGY-I. The maximum number of patients assigned to a single MS-3 is six.
  5. Discharge Summaries:
    Students do not dictate discharge summaries. A PGY-I is responsible for the discharge summary of a patient for whom he or she is assisted by an MS-3.
  6. Procedures:
    MS-3 students may do invasive procedures that they have previously observed under the direct supervision of the senior resident on the service.
  7. Work Rounds and Teaching Rounds:
    MS-3 students shall participate in both work rounds and teaching round to the full extent of their capacities.

The students have a standardized patient exam at UIC. The exam will take place at the SAIL Center of UIC

Evaluations:

Dr. Grumet will give each student mid rotation feedback. The composite grade for the clerkship will be assigned by Dr. Asra Khan.

Miscellaneous:

Students will get St. Francis photo ID and a pager, both of which must be returned at the end of the rotation. Students are allowed FREE meal tickets when they are on call. Students must complete & return the Rotator Data sheet & Internet Users Access forms to student coordinator, Catherine Clark. Evaluation forms (enclosed in your packets) for Medicine Residents/Teaching Staff should be completed at the end of your rotation and forward to Student Coordinator. These forms are not mandatory but we would like to know how you rate the physicians you were assigned to during your rotation.

Free parking is available at St Francis Hospital. PARKING ON THE STREET IS NOT ALLOWED, please use our seven-level enclosed parking garage, levels 4 and up.

(Make a right on Austin St at the north end of St Francis, then the next right to head into the parking garage.)

Special Note:

Students must return all books and/or pagers to St. Francis Hospital. A “registration hold” will be implemented for failure to comply to this “Borrowed Property” policy.

The #77 Belmont bus stops in front of the hospital.

The #151 Sheridan and #156 LaSalle buses stop at the corner of Surf Street and Sheridan Road; the hospital is located one block east of the bus stop.

Rapid Transit:  The Brown and Purple “el” lines stop at Diversey Avenue.  From there, take the #76 Diversey bus east to Sheridan Road; the hospital is located one block east of the bus stop.

PARKING:

Students have a variety of parking options available to them, including:

  • Parking on the street
  • Students may also park in the Saint Joseph Hospital parking garage for a discounted rate of $5.00 per day. Students must present their valid school ID card at the Security Office to have their parking ticket validated to receive the discounted rate and must adhere to the parking policy guidelines, which may be obtained in the Security Office.  Security escort is available to the parking lot from the hospital.

The Department of Medicine has a large faculty of subspecialists and primary care providers who are committed to the education of medical students.  The Internal Medicine Clerkship consists of both didactic and clinical experiences.  The didactic portion of the training includes daily morning report, an interactive case-based conference, weekly Medical Grand Rounds and a daily noon conference, organized strictly for residents and medical students.

During the inpatient experience, students act as an integral part of a dedicated resident-intern team.  Residents and interns enjoy the opportunity to teach others and to facilitate the professional growth of physicians in training.  Residents receive formal instruction in developing skills to help students rise to their fullest potential.  Teaching on the floors occurs at the bedside, on work rounds and during teaching rounds with an assigned teaching attending.

Ambulatory training is conducted in one of the resident clinics located near the hospital.  The medical students and residents in these clinics are supervised by dedicated faculty.

CALL SCHEDULE:

Long Call on the general medical floors is every fourth day.  The long call team signs out to the night float and leaves by 9 p.m.  Students also have the opportunity to admit patients on the team’s short call day which occurs every fifth day from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  No overnight call for students.

RESIDENT/ATTENDING INVOLVEMENT:

On Inpatient service, each student will work with a 2-intern, 1-resident team.  Each 2 teams have a teaching attending they meet with 3 times a week, and each patient has a primary attending.  On ambulatory service, students will work directly with residents and attendings.

Please note, students are allowed to rotate at St. Joseph with a respirator fit test completed M1 year, but will be restricted from TB isolation rooms since testing will be over a year old.

University of Illinois Hospital Overview:

Students are assigned to one of five inpatient general medicine services or inpatient Cardiology or inpatient Oncology. The teams may consist of attending physicians, fellows, residents, interns, and other learners. Students will have call and weekend responsibilities. In general, students will get 1 day off per week at the discretion of their team (generally a Saturday or Sunday depending on the call schedule). Formal teaching sessions may include daily resident conferences, Medicine Grand Rounds, and student conferences.

Schedule:

Monday-Friday: The day begins at 7:00 A.M. and typical daily activities consist of team work rounds, attending rounds, noon teaching conference, patient work-ups, and patient care activities. When not on call, the hospital workday may end by 5:00 P.M.

Weekends: Schedules vary depending on the call schedule. Attending rounds are made on weekends. When not on call, the weekend workday ends around 1:00 P.M.

Hours:

The hours will be approximately 7:00 AM through 5:00 PM with time given for lunch/noon conference.

Parking:

The parking is the same as for the medical school.

Hospital Requirement:

Clearance Process (ID Badge, Building and Computer Access):

Students will be notified by the Human Resources staff when clearance has been issued for their upcoming  clinical activity scheduled at Jesse Brown.  Students who have been cleared will not receive a VA ID.  You are instructed to wear your University ID while on JB campus at all times.  In addition, you will be given the appropriate Building Access Card for the section or service you will be rotating under.   Further information will be forwarded when the logistics of this process are worked out. If you have any questions regarding your rotation, computer access, scrub cards, etc. please contact your Program Coordinator or the Service-level Coordinator here at Jesse Brown.

Administrative Requirement:

Students scheduled at the VA must take care of two administrative requirements, immediately or at least 4-5 weeks prior to the start date of the rotation.  This must be taken care of immediately to avoid possible delays in granting computer access.

  1. Mandatory Fingerprinting: If you have NOT been fingerprinted in the past 120 days for the VA, this must be taken care of immediately.  Fingerprinting is available on the following schedule:

First-Day Reporting Instructions

Reporting Time

You will receive an email from Karen several days prior to your start date with your first­ day reporting time.

Parking

You may park in the garage on Clarendon Avenue. On your first day, take a ticket and by the time you leave for the day your free parking will be in effect and you’ll be able to swipe in and out with your ID badge. You will receive a parking hang tag for your car on your first day.

ID Badge

Upon entering Weiss Hospital, go directly to the Public Safety Department. This is located near the front entrance near the emergency department. The Public Safety staff will have been made aware that you have been approved for a badge.

Orientation

After receiving your Weiss ID badge, go to the Medical Education Department, C elevators, 7th floor (turn left). Your badge will give you access to the department, so just swipe your badge on the black box outside the door and ask for Karen.  At that time, you will be given your computer access information and your locker (please bring a lock). You will then have orientation with our site director and chief resident(s).

Call Schedule

  • No overnight calls on the inpatient
  • Short call once a week from 3:30 m. to 8:00 p.m.

The following is a typical schedule of the clinical responsibilities:

  1. f) Assignment to a resident team comprising of two PGY1s and one senior resident. Teams work six days per week with days off on Saturday or
