PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
- To gain an understanding of the mechanism of development of critical illness in the surgical patient, including general, trauma, vascular, cardiac, neurosurgical and other surgical specialty patients
- To recognize and manage organ system failure as they present in the surgical patient
- To provide exposure to the multitude of diagnostic, monitoring and therapeutic methods used to manage critically ill surgical patients
COMPETENCIES:
- To become comfortable with the initial evaluation and management of the critically ill surgical patient
- To gain an understanding and familiarity with a structured comprehensive organ system approach to the evaluation and management of the critically ill surgical patient.
- Patient care: The student will have opportunities to assess patients, formulate evaluations and treatment plans and learn diagnostic skills in acute settings
- Medical Knowledge: The didactics will assist students in the application of basic principles of critical care and increase the depth of knowledge as it relates to surgical critical care patients
- Practice Based Learning: This rotation will allow the student to identify knowledge deficits in critical situations and also identify what technical skills will need to be acquired for effective interventions for the critically ill surgical patient.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to rounds and patient care, the student will gain insight into patient and staff interactions and communications.
- Systems Based Practice: Critically ill surgical patients present unique challenges to the healthcare team. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the student will obtain a useful skill set to assist in the management of these complex patients.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: The student is involved in the initial resuscitation, evaluation and management of critically ill surgical patients. The student functions at an extern level and is supervised by the ICU senior resident, fellow and attending staff. The student is encouraged to participate actively in all ICU procedures including ultrasound, tube thoracostomy placement, bronchoscopy, central venous catheter placement and arterial line placement.
ASSESSMENT: Direct observation by attending staff that is present 24/7
