PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships.

PURPOSE:
The goal of the elective is for students to develop cognitive skills and competency to evaluate patients with pulmonary diseases.

COMPETENCIES:
The objectives of the elective are:

  • To enable students to carry out a more accurate and better focused history and physical in patients with complaints referable to the respiratory system.
  • To teach students the proper interpretation of pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gases and the principles of assisted mechanical ventilation.
  • To make students familiar with the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities applicable to patients with common respiratory disorders.
  • To make students familiar with the clinical, chemical, and radiologic features of common respiratory disorders: pulmonary embolus, chronic obstructive airway disease, acute respiratory failure, sleep apnea, pulmonary hypertension, carcinoma of the lung, etc.
  • To enable the student to formulate a problem list and a diagnostic and management plan for patients with complaints referable to the respiratory system.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The students will see patients in consultation and will follow them with the consulting pulmonologist. As a part of daily rounds with the consulting pulmonologist, they will present patients, review pertinent articles or topics, verify historical and physical findings at the bedside, reevaluate diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, and rite progress notes. In the office, they will have the opportunity to examine patients with common broncho pulmonary disorders. The student will see 5 new inpatients a week, and 2 patients per week in the office setting.

ASSESSMENT:
The students will receive feedback during this elective one-on-one every two weeks, as well as formal evaluation at the end of the rotation. Information for the final evaluation will be based on the information requested by the student’s school evaluation sheet.
