Reproductive Endocrinology – UI Health

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship.

PURPOSE:
The senior medical student elective in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility will provide an opportunity to expand the student’s knowledge of reproductive physiology.

COMPETENCIES:
The objectives of the Reproductive Endocrinology elective are:

  • Review normal physiology of reproduction;
  • Understand abnormalities of the hypothalamo pituitary gonadal axis;
  • Assist in the standard work up of the infertile couple;
  • Understand the indications for assisted reproductive technology procedures in infertility;
  • Observe assisted reproductive technology procedures; and
  • Assist in operative endoscopic procedures for patients with anatomical reproductive disorders.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student rotates through a clinical service where advanced cases of infertility and reproductive endocrinology are managed. This rotation will include participation in assisted reproductive technology procedures, and endoscopic surgery. The student will be interacting directly with Reproductive Endocrinology attendings during the entire rotation. There is an opportunity for resident and medical student interaction, approximately 30% of the rotation. Approximately 5-10 new patients are seen weekly in the infertility unit, and 2-4 assisted reproductive technology procedures are performed weekly during two weeks monthly. There are 2-4 hysterosalpingograms in radiology and 1-3 hysterosonograms in ultrasound performed weekly. Scheduled weekly lectures, seminars and conferences are part of the learning experience.

ASSESSMENT:
The student is evaluated based on: clinical participation (30%); understanding of reproductive physiology (30%); faculty evaluations (30%); and independent work (10% ).
