PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Pediatrics.
PURPOSE: Main objectives of this elective: to familiarize the student with the management of hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, fluid and electrolyte and acid base disturbances, acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, and urinary tract infections in newborns, children, and adolescent patients.
COMPETENCIES: Will be assessed by quizzing and assessing student’s knowledge base on handouts, articles, bedside teaching and outpatient clinical teaching. Written or oral quizzes will be used to assess student’s knowledge.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Student will see and/or follow 5-15 patients during the rotation. They will also get opportunities to present articles from current journals. All their work will be supervised by one of the faculty members. Interested students will have opportunities to participate in clinical research or write case reports for publication. They are also expected to attend lectures, journal clubs, and interdisciplinary meetings.
Pediatrics E&M Conference (E&M = evaluation and management): This is an educational enhancement specifically designed for the M4 student in Pediatrics – a case-based learning session designed to focus on issues that you likely will face as residents. All students on pediatrics electives will gather at 8am every Thursday of their rotation in 1208 CSB (12th floor conference room).
