PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Pediatrics.
PURPOSE: The aim is an introduction to pediatric infectious diseases.
COMPETENCIES: Expand knowledge in approach to infectious diseases and details of some specific infections.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Clinical clerkship hospital based format, plus one weekly clinic pediatric infectious disease clinic, which includes HIV-infected children and perinatally HIV exposed infants. Emphasis on independent reading and discussions of patients’ problems and selected topics. Children hospitalized with infectious problems are discussed on rounds regardless of official consultation status. Weekly joint conferences with Adult Infectious Disease and Pediatrics Infectious Diseases specialists from other Chicago hospitals ensures exposure to a range of problems. The student will also participate in pediatric departmental education programs, morning report, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality, and resident lectures series.
Pediatrics E&M Conference (E&M = evaluation and management): This is an educational enhancement specifically designed for the M4 student in Pediatrics – a case-based learning session designed to focus on issues that you likely will face as residents. All students on pediatric electives will gather at 8 am every Thursday of their rotation in the 5W Pediatrics conference room on the 5th floor of the hospital.
ASSESSMENT: Evaluation is based on observed performance in the above activities.
