PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed all of the M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine elective will provide comprehensive clinical experience in acute management of various urgent care concerns for pediatric patients, initial treatment and stabilization, and management/transfer.
COMPETENCIES:
Upon completion of the elective the student will be able to:
- Perform an accurate and complete history and physical exam, with the primary focus being Pediatric Emergency Medicine (i.e. evaluation of vital signs, mental status, cardiopulmonary status)
- Learn to develop and execute a management plan for patients, including diagnostic workup and specific treatment options in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine for both acute and chronic disorders
- Evaluate and obtain better understanding of Pediatric EKGs
- Evaluate newborn with fever
- Learn to assess and manage patients with: Chest Pain, Syncope, GI Bleed, Asthma Exacerbation, Abdominal Pain, Sickle Cell Disease, approach to Medically Complex Children with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Congenital Heart Disease, Aspiration, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Arrythmias, Extreme Prematurity History, Diabetes, Autism, Syndromes, and Developmental Delay
- Understand usage of subspecialty services
- Understand admission and discharge criteria
- Be able to retrieve and assimilate specific evidence and knowledge into their patient care activities
- Be able to effectively interact in a consistently professional and empathetic manner with patient’s familes and medical personnel
- Understand how to partner with health care managers, social workers, and other providers to assess, coordinate, and improve overall quality of health care
- All competencies of Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, Communication, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice will be consistently addressed by meeting the above learning objectives.

- three didactic lectures/week

Performance is reviewed by the attending physicians on the Pediatric Emergency Medicine service
