PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core clerkship in Pediatrics.
PURPOSE/COMPETENCIES: To begin the development of competency in recognizing and managing critically ill children in a PICU setting.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Students will participate in the PICU service as a member of a multidisciplinary team including the pediatric intensivist, pediatric housestaff (2), clinical pharmacy, nursing, social work, and specialists in relevant disciplines such as pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology, etc. The student will round with the team and attend general pediatric conferences as well as the smaller talks relating to pediatric critical care. They will also work-up and follow patients in the PICU under the direction of the pediatric house staff and the attending in PICU. Goals will include learning an approach to the patient with multiple organ system failure and learning practical application of physiology to critically ill patients.
Pediatrics E&M Conference (E&M = evaluation and management): This is an educational enhancement specifically designed for the M4 student in Pediatrics – a case-based learning session designed to focus on issues that you likely will face as residents. All students on pediatrics electives will gather at 8am every Thursday of their rotation in 1208 CSB (12th floor conference room).
ASSESSMENT: Clinical performance is assessed by the attending staff based on the standard elective competencies.

Important information for domestic and Canadian medical students: Completed applications with all required documents must be received 4 weeks prior to the start of the elective. Please plan accordingly to allow your school the necessary processing time for gathering the required documents.
