Organ Transplantation – UI Health

Instructor’s Note: unpredictable- depends on organ donor availability.

PURPOSE:
To provide medical and surgical experience in clinical kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. This includes those aspects related to the medical care of patients with renal and liver failure in general (i.e. fluid and electrolytes, diet, hemodialysis and management of hypertension) and diabetes. Also, instruction is provided related specifically to transplant recipients (i.e. eligibility, immunological considerations, transplant surgery, immunosuppression, etc.) as well as vascular access surgery and organ donation.

COMPETENCIES:
Thorough working knowledge of organ donation, transplantation and immuno suppression.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Opportunity for clinical investigation may be provided, and laboratory experience when requested. Also, when called upon, the student can accompany the team to retrieve organs from an organ donor. Instructional methods: Bedside and didactic rounds, outpatient clinics, small animal surgery, divisional conferences, student presentation. Number of patients/week: 5-10 inpatients and 20-40 outpatients. Minimum of 4 weeks on rotation.

ASSESSMENT:
Subjective clinical evaluation by faculty.
