PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine and Surgery.

PURPOSE:
The program is designed to familiarize the students with the diagnosis and management of a spectrum of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides clinical experience through consultation services at the University of Illinois Hospital. The consulting service consists of an attending physician, one fellow in gastroenterology, two or three residents in internal medicine, and one or two medical students.
COMPETENCIES:
The student will become familiar with the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of major diseases of the gastrointestinal system. The student will become familiar with the indications, contraindications, and cost-effectiveness of endoscopic and radiographic diagnostic modalities in gastroenterology.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student will have the opportunity to evaluate patients, both in stable and acute settings. One to two new patients will be seen each day. The student will also spend one-half day per week in the GI clinic under the direct supervision of an attending gastroenterologist. Direct patient contact and close follow-up are emphasized to acquaint the student with the appropriate management of gastrointestinal disorders. When indicated, the student will follow patients through diagnostic studies such as liver biopsy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, esophageal motility testing, esophageal dilatation, colonoscopy, and ERCP, as well as endoscopic management of GI bleeding. The student will participate in daily rounds and will present cases to the attending physician. A once a week histology conference affords the student an opportunity to better understand the pathophysiology of clinical medicine. The weekly GI clinicopathological seminar is attended by staff radiologists, surgeons, pathologists and gastroenterologists. Cases presented are drawn from the inpatient and outpatient services of both hospitals, and from the practices of several part-time or private attendings. Attendance at a weekly research conference is also encouraged and provides a unique opportunity to be exposed to both clinical and basic research in gastroenterology conducted at the local and national levels by invited speakers.
ASSESSMENT:
The attending physician provides individual verbal feedback at the mid-point and conclusion of the rotation. A written evaluation is completed at the end of the month by the attending physician and/or fellow.

Reporting Instructions
For first day of rotation, students should report to the GI Endoscopy Unit located on the 2nd floor of University of Illinois Hospital, to locate the GI consult fellow.
