PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:

Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkship in Psychiatry.

PURPOSE:

COMPETENCIES: The goals of the elective are:
•  Diagnostic evaluations;
•  Emergency and crisis management of patients with psychiatric disorders;
•  Introduction to important concepts in emergency psychiatry.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:

The Psychiatry Assessment Clinic (PAC) encompasses a walk-in clinic, referrals from primary care and specialty clinics to mental health service line and consults to the emergency room. The attending psychiatrist and psychiatry residents will provide close supervision, including direct observation and teaching throughout the rotation. The Clinic functions from 8a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

ASSESSMENT: A requirement of the rotation is preparation of a brief review of a topic in emergency psychiatry such as substance abuse, violence, or homelessness. That review is presented to and discussed with the clinic staff.
