PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Must have completed all M3 clerkships.
PURPOSE:
Exposure to the critically ill patient, management of infusions, ventilators, strategies for life support devices and recognition of decompensation of clinical status.
COMPETENCIES:
Understanding the care for a critically ill patient from a medical and psychosocial point of view, with an attention on the physiology as well as addressing goals of care. More exposure to critically ill patients, more ability to discriminate between sick/not sick, attention to sepsis and respiratory failure as well as other etiologies of shock.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Daily lectures and teaching rounds. Morning rounds: 7a-12p. Lecture: 12 pm -12:30 pm. More exposure to critically ill patients, more ability to discriminate between sick/not sick, attention to sepsis and respiratory failure as well as other etiologies of shock. Students will see critically ill patients; post surgical patients; respiratory failure shock and post CABG.
ASSESSMENT:
Midterm feedback given and end of rotation; if there will be multiple attendings rotating, each attending will provide verbal feedback. Students will be given midterm feedback after the second week, with a sit down meeting and the evaluation form as a guide.
