PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Completion of all M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE:
The Cardiology elective will provide the student with an outstanding experience in clinical consultative cardiology. Students will develop and refine necessary cardiovascular exam skills and focus on the evaluation and management of cardiovascular disease in a consultative role. Students will also be exposed to fundamentals of electrocardiogram interpretation as well as other cardiology procedures.
COMPETENCIES:
Upon completion of the Cardiology elective, students will be able to do the following:
- Perform a thorough cardiovascular examination;
- Understand cardiac anatomy and physiology and how it applies to the clinical setting;
- Evaluate patients with the following cardiovascular conditions: a) Coronary artery disease including angina, unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction; b) Lipid disorders; c) Heart failure; d) Valvular heart disease; e) Cardiac arrhythmias.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student will see inpatient consultations prior to the Fellow and Attending, and participate in clinical rounds. Students will also be encouraged to participate in daily educational conferences presented by cardiology fellows or attendings. Students will also utilize the Cardiovascular Training Center, where computer based instruction and the Harvey Patient Simulator will allow students to develop the basics of ECG interpretation and cardiovascular physical exam skills. Additionally, the student will gain exposure to each of the following areas:
- Non-invasive testing including: echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal), exercise/dobutamine echocardiography, exercise stress testing, nuclear cardiology;
- Invasive cardiology procedures including cardiac catheterization, coronary angioplasty, coronary stenting and intracoronary ultrasound;
- Cardiac electrophysiology, including indications, diagnostic electrophysiology studies, ablative techniques, and pacemaker/defibrillator implantation.
ASSESSMENT:
The student’s performance will be assessed in the following manner: Attending physicians and cardiology Fellows on the consult service during the student’s rotation will complete the standard UIC evaluation form. Comments and evaluations are synthesized to complete one final evaluation.
Reporting instructions will be emailed one week prior to the start of rotation.
