Cook County Health, one of the nation’s largest public health systems committed to serving all county residents regardless of ability to pay, and UI Health, the academic health enterprise of the University of Illinois Chicago which includes the only state-funded health system in Chicago, serve more than 100,000 Illinois children. These pediatric patients include a substantial proportion of children covered by Illinois Medicaid who receive care at nearly 40 CCH and UI Health locations across the state, primarily in Cook County and Chicago. Shriners Hospitals for Children Heading link
UI Health has been formally affiliated with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago since late 2014, but collaboration between the organizations has spanned several decades. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago is dedicated to transforming the lives of children in Illinois and beyond through specialized surgical care and treatment of spinal deformities, cleft lip and palate and craniofacial deformities, pediatric orthopedic conditions and advanced rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries in children. Care and services are provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Some UI Health medical faculty also serve on the medical team at the Chicago Shriners Hospital as well as provide advanced imaging, anesthesia and other care. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago provides a valuable training site for UI Health medical students and residents, and has invested in research conducted by UI Health faculty. Through this growing partnership, the two organizations aim to provide enhanced access and more streamlined care for children well into the future.

Established in 1909, IJR was the first child mental health clinic in the nation and one of the first to train psychologists and psychiatrists in child and adolescent specialties. Its rich history includes ties to Jane Addams’ Hull House, the first juvenile court in the nation, and even the Dick and Jane readers, which were developed at IJR to study the connection between reading difficulties and delinquency. Today it houses nationally recognized programs in psychology and child psychiatry and is a major site for social work training throughout the Chicago region.

The Division of Specialized Care for Children (DSCC) is an essential piece of the public outreach mission of UIC. As a division of UIC, the DSCC has unique access to resources and research to assist Illinois families and children with special healthcare needs. DSCC provides care coordination services to children across the state with complex medical needs.
The main place where Department of Pediatrics currently works with DSCC is in the PCORI BEST project. This initiative focuses on to provide a standardized behavioral health intervention to teens to support their wellbeing and assist with their transition to adulthood. In addition to behavioral health interventions, DSCC also administers programs such as the Sickle Cell Adolescent Transition (STAR) program and Neurocognitive testing for pediatric oncology, sickle cell and neurology.
