Dean E. Schraufnagel Endowed Professorship

The Department of Medicine has instituted an endowed professorship for Dean Schraufnagel. Dean did his medical residency at UIC and has been on faculty since 1981. He directed the fellowship from 2000 to 2017 and has helped countless UIC fellows and faculty through the years.
Dean is a global leader in respiratory health. He has published 200 peer-reviewed papers and edited 4 books. He has served in leadership in national and international organizations working to promote lung health throughout the world. The endowed professorship will help to provide perpetual support for research and faculty development in a Department he continues to champion.

Its research endeavors are driving major advances against many leading respiratory health conditions, including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and others. Its innovative public health initiatives have improved health care for the underserved in Chicago and guided national policy.
