Bio
I am a clinician-scientist that regularly attends to patients with life-threatening respiratory ailments, such as COPD, COVID-19, and lung cancer, at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVAMC) and University of Illinois Hospital. I am also the Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at JBVAMC, and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. My clinical research programs are clinical environmental toxicology and lung cancer. I’m the MPI/PI of a US Department of Housing and Urban Development-funded interdisciplinary, collaborative clinical research project that aims to determine the adverse effects of inadequate indoor air quality in households of U.S. military veterans with COPD. In addition, I’m Co-Investigator on the VA-funded Lung Oncology Precision Program (LPOP) VISN12 Center of Excellence at JBVAMC. My pre-clinical research endeavors focus on developing and delivering drug products to counter acute poisonings and drug overdoses. My research programs are leading to several issued and pending patents some of which were commercialized.
