Community and School-Based Implementation Science Approaches to Health Equity in Asthma and Allergic Diseases
Dr. Pappalardo Wlochowicz is a board-certified allergist/immunologist with additional board certifications in internal medicine and pediatrics. She has a diverse range of clinical experience in both adults and children, urban, suburban, and community environments. She possesses a unique ability to get evidence-based practices adapted, implemented and disseminated widely.
She serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics with an indefinite tenure at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). She previously served as the Medical Director of the Mobile Care Chicago Asthma Van where she supervised a large team of clinicians and community service experts to ensure guideline-based care and quality across Chicago. In her role as the Allergy Service Director within UIC’s Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep & Allergy, she works to provide and structure clinical care in the allergy within a state-run public institution.
Community-based participatory research (CBPR), implementation science, and mixed methods are core components of her expertise. Dr Pappalardo designed and led a pilot effort across the state of Illinois to implement stock inhaler programming in urban and rural schools. This project allowed schools to have a rescue inhaler available to anyone who needed one for emergency asthma symptom relief. The success of this project led to it being rapidly upscaled statewide through the RESCUE-IL program.
As an allergist and an expert in how exposures impact health outcomes, Dr. Pappalardo’s scientific and clinical skills is being applied as a Co-Investigator within the NIH P20 Center for Extreme Weather and Health Excellence. Here she engages community partners, data scientists, exposure scientists and community and academic leaders in creating a user friendly dashboard to understand extreme weather events and their impact on health.
Dr. Pappalardo’s allergy, implementation science, mixed methods, public health, and community-engaged research expertise allows her to collaboratively address healthcare access, impacts of extreme weather, and to execute asthma and food allergy community-based interventions.
