Mission
To establish The University of Illinois at Chicago, Division of Cardiology as a nationally recognized Center of Excellence in the evaluation and management of cardiovascular disease.
Research
At the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Regenerative Medicine in Cardiology, our mission is to explore the developmental and functional properties of cardiac muscle through the use of embryonic and adult stem cells. We will extend our basic science results to preclinical studies in animal models of cardiovascular disease with defined therapeutic outcomes. Our goal is to develop clinical trials that translate our preclinical research into safe and effective ways of treating cardiovascular disease in our patients.

Patient Care
The University of Illinois Division of Cardiology maintains outpatient offices both in the Heart Center and in the Outpatient Care Center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). UIC cardiologists and the full range of ambulatory cardiac services are available. Many advanced tests are available on an outpatient basis through the Heart Center, including a full lipid profile as well as advanced lipid screening, assessment of the clotting ability of a patient’s blood, advanced internal heart measurements with ultrasound, and treadmill stress tests.

Fellowship Program
The Division of Cardiology offers four fellowship programs.
In order to help further the Universities mission, the division of Cardiology is committed to providing the finest training to our next generation of cardiovascular specialists. Our strong and unwavering commitment to education and research is supported by a major university hospital and the largest medical school in the country. The clinical mission of the program is directed by a distinguished faculty whose training and expertise places them at the forefront of contemporary cardiology.
The goal of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System Heart Failure program is to provide outstanding patient care while developing and applying cutting edge technology and treatment approaches. We utilize a multidisciplinary disease management approach to care of patients with early to advanced stage heart failure. Our program strives to meet our patients medical and non-medical needs, employing a team of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers and physicians trained in the management of heart failure.
At University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, our mission is to offer unique, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients with atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, and other electrophysiology issues. UIC faculty has been at the center of cardiac electrophysiology innovation. In collaboration with Boston Scientific the Cryo Balloon atrial fibrillation ablation technology was developed at UIC. UIC faculty is continually innovating to improve current therapeutic arrhythmia technologies and introduce new techniques and tools to make curative technologies safer and more effective.
The Divisions of Cardiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Advocate Christ Medical Center (Christ) and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVA) are committed to providing excellent clinical service that utilizes state-of-the-art technology. By virtue of being part of a major university hospital, we have a strong and unwavering commitment to education and research. The clinical mission of the program is supported by a distinguished faculty whose training and expertise places them at the forefront of contemporary cardiology. All of the training sites house newly updated, state-of-the-art equipment . The clinical program at all sites are linked to an electronic medical record system, allowing for review of clinical records and imaging studies on-line, 24 hours a day. The clinical training takes place at the UIC, Christ and JBVA.
Our Clinical Programs
Arrhythmia
and
Electrophysiology
Our faculty has been at the center of cardiac electrophysiology innovation. We offer unique, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients with atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, and other electrophysiology issues. Our faculty is continually innovating to improve current therapeutic arrhythmia technologies and introduce new techniques and tools to make curative technologies safer and more effective.
Heart
Failure
We utilize a multidisciplinary disease management approach to care of patients with early to advanced stage heart failure. Our program strives to meet our patients medical and non-medical needs, employing a team of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers and physicians trained in the management of heart failure.
Cardiovascular
Magnetic
Resonance
(CMR)
Our CMR program has rapidly grown to be one of the highest volume clinical programs in the region receiving referrals from throughout the Chicagoland area. Our 1.5 and 3 Tesla scanners produce images of superb quality and resolution, providing a detailed assessment of the anatomy and function of the heart.
Cardio-Oncology
Program
In partnership with the Cancer Center, this program provides evaluation of patients being treated with potentially cardiotoxic regimen using speckle tracking echocardiography. The goal of screening is to detect pre-clinical changes in myocardial function allowing early institution of cardioprotective therapies.
