Nephrology Research
Opportunities exist for trainees to be involved in ongoing research in both basic and clinical translational science.
Top areas of research in Nephrology include:
1) epidemiology of chronic kidney disease
2) health disparities and outcomes in chronic kidney disease
3) multi-omic mechanisms underlying kidney and cardiovascular disease
4) molecular biology of acute kidney injury and autoimmune disease.
The Division has a robust NIH research portfolio which includes the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study, the Hispanic CRIC Study, the Mexico City CRIC Study, and the Hemodialysis Opioid Prescription Effort (HOPE) Consortium. These studies offer rich opportunities for trainees and early career investigators. In addition, opportunities for course work at the UIC School of Public Health are also available, including the MS in Clinical and Translational Science program. An ongoing affiliation with the Center for Management of Complex Chronic Care at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center affords further opportunities in health services research targeted at chronic and end-stage kidney disease. The Division also offers opportunities for participation in NIH research training programs including a two-year program for pre-and postdoctoral trainees and a summer research training program for first year medical students.
