“What I love about the UIC Nephrology Fellowship program is truly just the strong faculty. The faculty here, they’re excellent at didactics and teaching, and they really care about your education and the fact that you’re going to develop a strong foundation and strong fundamentals in nephrology. Whenever I need help, and this is 24/7, they’ve always been there for me.”

In-Patient Heading link
Fellows benefit from the breadth of clinical experiences offered at three inpatient clinical sites, all of which are conveniently located in close proximity so fellows can easily walk between sites: University of Illinois Hospital, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The University of Illinois Hospital is a tertiary care referral center and provides the opportunity for training in transplantation medicine and continuous renal replacement therapies. At the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, fellows are exposed to geriatric nephrology and patients with a spectrum of kidney disease. The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County is a safety-net hospital providing care to a diverse of population of patients, offering a particularly rich experience in management of glomerular disease.
Ambulatory Experience Heading link
Renal/Hypertension Continuity Clinic
Each fellow leads the care of a panel of patients, allowing them to gain experience in longitudinal management and to develop relationships with patients.
Longitudinal Hemodialysis Clinic
Fellows manage a panel of chronic hemodialysis patients and lead a monthly interdisciplinary patient care conference.
Longitudinal Home Dialysis Clinic
For one year of training, fellows manage a panel of peritoneal and home hemodialysis patients.
Didactic Curriculum and Conferences Heading link
Fellows jumpstart their clinical training with a specially designed bootcamp experience to give them the tools to succeed in their first months of fellowship.
Next, they benefit from a dedicated summer core conference series to expand their knowledge on a variety of core topics in nephrology. These lectures are led by our talented teaching faculty.
Beginning in the fall, fellows begin to participate as leaders in the conference curriculum, taking turns leading conferences alongside faculty mentors. Conference types include a rotating calendar of morning report, grand rounds, clinical case conference, research conference, biopsy conference, journal club, M&M, and QA/QI.
Research Opportunities Heading link
Fellows have the opportunity to become involved with both basic and clinical translational science research. The Division has a robust NIH research portfolio which includes the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study, the Hispanic CRIC Study, the Mexico City CRIC Study, and the Hemodialysis Opioid Prescription Effort (HOPE) Consortium. These studies offer rich opportunities for nephrology fellows. In addition, opportunities for course work at the UIC School of Public Health are also available, including the MS in Clinical and Translational Science program and MPH in Epidemiology/Biostatistics. An ongoing affiliation with the Center for Management of Complex Chronic Care at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center affords further opportunities in health services research targeted at chronic and end-stage kidney disease. The Division also offers opportunities for participation in a two-year NIH research training program for pre-and postdoctoral trainees.
